The Emerging Phase Change in Cybersecurity

June 01, 2018

The IoT. Cloud computing. Big Data. In this era where human scale has given way to machine scale, cybersecurity has become an even bigger problem and requires a substantial change in the way incidents are resolved.

The challenge has clearly surpassed the human capacity to defend it, but the question should not be how to replace humans. Instead, efforts should be focused on how to account for human error within security strategies and how to augment human defenders.

This paper takes a look at how we arrived at the cyber threat impasse we find ourselves in today, and presents a holistic approach to new technologies (machine learning, open source data processing, automation) within an integrated model of cybersecurity. To use ML — or more broadly, AI — effectively, the cybersecurity paradigm needs to shift from finding low-level patterns in siloed data and then aggregating the output, to aggregating data from across the network and then looking for the patterns in that cross-network data that really matter. The point is not whether we use these technologies, but how to use them to greatest effect.
